What is a Deductible?
A Deductible is the part you are responsible for before the insurance company begins to pay. For example, if you have a $1000 deductible and a medical bill for $800, You would be required to pay the $800. Medical claims are cumulative, so once you have bills equaling $1000, then the insurance company pays its part.
What is a Co-Pay?
Copays are a set amount (set by the insurance company and your specific plan) for medical services that are your responsibility. The insurance company is responsible for the rest of the bill. For example, If you have a copay of $20, you are required to pay this at every visit and the insurance company will pay the rest.
What is Co-Insurance?
Co-insurance is a percentage of the total bill that is your responsibility and are implemented after your deductible is met. For example, your co-insurance is 20%. This means that you are responsible for 20% of the entire bill for the services you received that day and the insurance company is responsible for 80,. So, if the bill was $200, your 20% would be $40.
What is Out of Pocket Maximums?
Out of Pocket Maximum is the maximum dollar amount you will pay in an insurance year (typically a calendar year) This is made up of your deductible and co-insurance payments. Typically, copays are not included in your Out of Pocket Max. For example, if you have a $2000 out of pocket maximum, a $1000 deductible and 20% co-insurance, you pay the first $1000, then 20% of your bills until you have paid another $1000 equaling your $2000 maximum. After this, the insurance pays 100%
