Individual Counseling for Teens | Clinton Township, MI
Is your teen being defiant? Getting into things they shouldn’t be? Lying to you? Listens to their friends more than they listen to you? Grades are dropping? Some of this is normal, but how do you know how much is normal and when there is a real problem?
Adolescence is a time of extensive change. Physically, mentally, and emotionally, these teens are growing into adults. Technically, adolescence goes through age 25 as their brains are still developing until then! It can be extremely confusing and difficult for them to go through. With puberty and the onset of sexuality, most teens find it difficult to navigate all the changes they are going through. Friend drama, defiance to authority figures, social isolation, extreme mood swings, it becomes overwhelming very quickly.
Parents can become the enemy as the friend group takes the lead. This is where a therapist can be especially helpful as a trusted confidant to the teen. They can help the teen figure things out with the wisdom of an adult, but one the teen will listen to.
We have therapists who have years of experience successfully helping teenagers navigate their way through this tumultuous time in their life, without ruining it for the long run. We are also proud to offer services for teens who are struggling with gender identity or their own sexuality. We have therapists who are trained in working with teens with these issues or who may identify with the LGBTQ community.
We initially meet with the parent and the teen, and then typically do individual counseling with the teen to build a trusting relationship. If needed, family therapy is also available. With after school, evening, and even some weekend appointments available, it is easy to fit therapy into a busy schedule. We also offer both in person and online appointments to fit everyone’s preferences.
